Due to the last minute API breakage, he's letting the 0.99.0 snapshots bake for a week
One week seems a bit on the short side.

Cool, can't wait for the first official release. It also means we'll soon be able to see how good(or bad) Wayland really is, and I have a bit of a good feeling of course.
It should only get easier to test/see it from first hand from now on.

Its the desktop guys that "hold it back" and some basic apps of course (ie. firefox). Hope that after the official release we'll see a full desktop in a few months time.

As the article already states: Wayland is far from being usable. The 1.0 release means only stability regarding to APIs. Up until now Wayland was too much of a moving target for other developers to port to it.

IMO modifying applications and its toolkits to look reasonable on retina displays is a more important goal.

    Hopefully.

The major toolkits (GTK/QT) have been working on Wayland for a while now. And with it's compositor approach combined with a embedded X server it should already be compatible with all the applications you are using today. Early adopters shouldn't have much trouble using it in a few months, I expect.
