So .. Since Wayland can be run within Xorg, this wouldn't happen to mean it can be used without Wayland enabled drivers, right?

and just to give you a glimpse of an answer to your question "why even bother...": becasue x is very blaoted, has a mix of outdated apis, is signed by a history of many many bad things. donig a clean start for a dispaly server is something that linux needed for a long long time! there are many things that need to be fixed and most will never be able to be fixed within X due to its architecture.
