When you are running Wayland under Xorg, you do not need special drivers.

In fact, if you run Wayland under Xorg, it even works under Virtualbox.

and just to give you a glimpse of an answer to your question "why even bother...": becasue x is very blaoted, has a mix of outdated apis, is signed by a history of many many bad things. donig a clean start for a dispaly server is something that linux needed for a long long time! there are many things that need to be fixed and most will never be able to be fixed within X due to its architecture.
