I thought that was for doing something to the disk heads in laptop hard drives to stop them damaging the platter if dropped - or I have been suckered by marketing bollocks again?

The last two dropped Dell Latitude E6520 (~1-2m), needed a new hard drive...

I believe you are correct, but not all hard drives do this and I'm pretty sure the sensor data is kept within the drive only, so lm-sensors can't read the sensor.
