Systemd is not a bad technology far from it but if you wish bigger picture what it brings

So what does a userland vs kernelland fight bring to the table? Nothing. This is about mutual exclusive init systems where one is a complete whack crack piece of deadware and the other is not.

Upstart is a piece of old dung that needs to go away. systemd is the messenger.

You have to understand this:
Upstart is modern, it works and it is well tested (does Systemd have a decent test suite now?).
Ubuntu does not need to switch to Systemd right now.

I do agree that having one standard init system everywhere would be great for many reasons. And Canonical would probably be happy to spend man power somewhere else than Upstart.
I think they may reconsider this after 14.04.

But such a change is not trivial. Especially with such a fast moving target as Systemd.

Hopefully. systemd is much more user friendly and it's much easier to configure. It's also much more powerful, so I hope they'll switch.
