Phoronix: DebConf 12: Linux Gaming, Mobile, 64-bit ARMv8 Planning

The DebConf 12 developer summit ended on Saturday in Managua. Here is a recap of the prominent Debian Linux and open-source discussions that took place in Nicaragua's capitol for the past week.

HAHAHA there was no one there. Shows how much devs give a shit about debian. They can't agree with the name? Like yeah that's a priority! Ubuntu will take everything and nobody will develop for Debian anymore. Just make it for Ubuntu. Debian is a joke!

I really like Debian, but yeah, the Linux community is too fragmented imho. Ubuntu is just fine for 95%+ of all people, so I am all okay with developers concentrating on that. The really advanced users using Gentoo, Arch, whatever are able to take care of themselves.

Yeah, let Debian die and see what is left from Ubuntu, wait, what do we have? Unity, the Software Center, the Ubuntu One clients. No system to build the core on? Who needs that anyway, it is neither shiny nor buggy enough to be really considered a part of Ubuntu.

It's superficial I know but this is what people seem to want. If people continue to develop shit for Ubuntu and Debian slows down we will be exactly in the situation you dread. And by the looks of it, it probably won't be long.

May be there is a much simpler explanation: Wheezy has just entered the frozen state, the developers are maybe just sitting at home fixing bugs like hell and have no time/desire to travel to Managua to discuss about the name of the next release (I still would prefer Debian Buttercup or Debian Pricklepants).

I've always wondered if these version names don't hurt adoption in corporate world. I mean picture an idiotic boss who hears of this thing called linux and wants to switch since it's free and then here's names like oneiric ocelot or precise pangolin and runs scared to microsoft's cold embrace. I mean can't they come with 'professional' sounding names? Xp Vista 7 sound a lot better than natty narwhal for the uninitiated

When you look at Fedora 17 Oneiric Ocelot doesn't sound that bad. Beefy Miracle could come directly from a porn movie.

And everybody that wanted Ubuntu without the bullshit left for Mint a year ago.

    This so much...

I absolutely hate the pet names for each release. And since everyone want to use the pet name instead of the version number I have to go and recite the alphabet in my head to figure out what version of Mint or Ubuntu they're talking about, it's even worse for Fedora and Debian since they don't follow an alphabetical scheme.

It has a version number, use it,it leaves no ambiguity and sounds a whole lot more professional then calling your new release "Beefy Miracle".

That is unless your nerd rage goal is to forever have Linux relegated to 1~2%(embedded devices and android still do not count) of the market so that you have more hacker geek cred. But if thats the case I don't want to hear word one about how X company wont support Linux.
