Is it going to be subscription only, free with paid premium features, completely free or something else?

Depends on your outlook. The vast majority of Kickstarter games that I have seen use Unity, just because it has good cross-platform support, and that's important for independent developers.

The market seems to have basically fallen out of high-graphics and high-resource engines. The emphasis seems to be on ease of development and portability these days, and it is on these merits where Unity soars compared to even the quite cross-platform Unigine.

Do you mean open source market, or gaming market in general?

    Look at GuildSoftware (VendettaOnline).

Gaming market in general. With the rise of console, mobile, and indie gaming, the desire for complex high-graphic, high-tech engines appears to be dropping out. Consoles and mobile do not have the same hardware power, and Indies do not have the man power. Therefore the two main features being sought after are ease of development and portability. As I said, that is why Unity is being so successful, and now that they have good Linux support that is actually a good thing.

Take a look at the Witcher 2 - it has advanced graphics and it's quite demanding on the hardware. CD Projekt Red developers also ported their Red Engine to OpenGL which allowed them to release native Mac OSX build (not sure about their plans for Linux though). It suffered somewhat from the consolization in comparison with the Witcher 1, but not in the graphics aspect, but rather in the interface, and overall it's a good game.
