looks like speech recognition is the hype do jour, like cloud computing.
With the exception that everybody knows what speech recognition is and that it's actually helpful especially for people that have difficulties with other types of interaction. So I would say it's a good thing if this gets hyped.
To make things perfect, we should probably put speech recognition in "the cloud"![]()
Mostly because before it was really, truly horrible at recognizing the correct word.But we've had speech recognition earlier in the 70s, 80s, and 90s too.
But it really never caught on.

Nothing really new, it is so old (concept, not this API specification) that Opera already dropped support for that. :-D
AFAIR they used plugin supplied by IBM and available only on Windows, I remember trying it back in 7.x or 8.x.
Ideally all apps would implement AT-SPI (or there is something better available?) and would use single, platform wide tool, all speaking using one voice, with the same quality etc...
