Default Intel Driver To Play A Bit Better With S3TC Compression

Phoronix: Intel Driver To Play A Bit Better With S3TC Compression

In addition to the Intel driver now always enabling floating-point textures, a patented feature but something that's required for GL3 compliance, the Intel DRI driver is set to play better with S3TC, the also patent-troubled but widely-used S3 Texture Compression...

    Default Idle threat???

The whole S3TC patent thing is pure bogosity. The concept is just unpatentable. Compressed textures? Did you know that "compressed textures" have been available for many decades at your local hardware store? They call it "rolled up wallpaper".

This is just another of those bogus "with a computer" patents. Take any commonly done action, paste "with a computer" on the end and you can get a patent. So even though you can't patent textures and you can't patent compression, you can patent compressed textures.

But wait it's even better! You can append "with a portable computing device" and get yet another patent. Of course Apple can add "with rounded corners" onto any concept and patent that!

But REALLY it's about teaching the great unwashed masses the importance of corporate power. If they tell you that compressing textures is patentable, well you are just going to have to learn to accept this, because you are going to be asked to accept a lot more bogosity in the future and you had better get used to the idea.
