While Unigine Valley is finally being released this week as a beautiful OpenGL (and Direct3D for Windows users) tech demo, it's very demanding on the system's graphics card and drivers. The open-source Mesa/Gallium3D drivers are out of the question and even the proprietary graphics drivers drop to their knees...
1600 * 900 = 1440000 pixels.
1280 * 1024 = 1310720 pixels.
1600x900 should be listed after 1280x1024
Same for 1600x1200 and 1680x1080, 1600x1200 has more pixels than 1680x1050.
Just let your scripts do the multiplication and sort things that way
The scripts do do the multiplication but at that stage later in the process its (unfortunately) being sorted differently since its just a string but doesn't know if its a resolution, file size, or what, without parsing the string to figure it out.

It says in the article that CPU performance is holding it back... Plus the frame rate doesn't even change much until the jump to the very highest resolution tested, which is a telltale sign of CPU bottlenecks.
