IMHO the headline is misleading. He already left Linux October of 2012.
Without noticing, I stopped turning on the screen for my Linux machine during 2012. By the time I moved to a new apartment in October of 2012, I did not even bother plugging the machine back and to this date, I have yet to turn it on.
In my opinion, the Linux desktop wouldn't be as fragmented, weren't it for the Gnome shell and Unity.
Partially he is to blame.

I've read little about/by him. However, everytime I did, he seemed to come off as a conceited ass.

Miguel, Thanks for Midnight Commander. I hope someone is going to maintain it. I have never found any use for Moonlight.
