I think it's not just rude. It's the same as lying to someone's face.If you know for 6 months that you're not going to do something you said you would it's rude not to tell people.
LightDM is under the CLA. Canonical probably won't use his lib.

Those are the things that happen when a project is aimed for a specific distro.

Why on earth does Wayland need a display manager to begin with? Isn't that one of those outdated X11 things we're trying to get rid of?
