Gnome3 have been receiving a lot of criticism. Both valid criticism and unjustified criticism. Luckily there is another and better way to measure popularity. The amount of contributors tells you much more. It will show the willingness of people and companies to invest time and money in free software. Im happy to share some statistics from Ohloh.
It shows Gnome and KDE now have the exact same amount of contributors (last three months average).
A lot can be said about past and future tendencies, everybody has the right to have an opinion. But Gnome suddenly suffering from lack of contributors? Not true.
