A special driver is needed for supporting Thunderbolt on Apple hardware since Apple implemented Thunderbolt holt-plug support within their OS X driver rather than at the firmware level, which is where it's implemented by other Thunderbolt devices.
Please understand that, short of releasing their driver as FOSS, Apple is doing the right thing here. Binary firmware blobs are a bad thing, and the only thing that is "special" here is that people seem to imply that Apple is somehow doing something out of the ordinary when it is exactly the opposite.
