Phoronix: Intel's Core i7 5960X Is Fast & Wonderful Under Linux

After my first X99 motherboard burned up in a strange situation, since yesterday my Core i7 5960X Haswell-E system started working wonderfully with Linux after using a different motherboard. I've been hammering the system hard for the past day and no X99/i7-5960X issues have come about (albeit I've refrained from doing any overclocking or DDR4 tweaking yet) and this high-end $1000+ (USD) CPU is running great under Linux...

I'd be interested to see how fast this could compile one of the browsers or even just webkit, because those are what takes longest to compile of anything in my experience

If anyone submits such a test profile for that use-case, it would be easy to incorporate....

Hey Michael, what CPU Coolers do you use? I've seen a variety in your various pictures
All opinions are my own not those of my employer if you know who they are.

the documentation isn't clear on how to take this and set up a test from it to run through pts, so that I can test the test, how's this though? http://pastebin.com/SLvkPFAC

According to Michaels tests, Intel 5970X (900€ in Europe) is double as fast vs AMD 8370 (180€ in Europe) - timed Linux kernel compile and C-Ray.

AMD results could definitely be improved via finetuning of governor, but I guess no more than several percent.

Toss it in a directory ~/.phoronix-test-suite/test-profiles/local/build-firefox or so. You can look at the other ~/.phoronix-test-suite/test-profiles/pts/

hm, well it doesn't appear to be checking all of the external dependencies, in particular the -dev entries don't seem to be being checked, is this expected behavior or is there some special format they should be in?

Yes, all package handling is abstracted out in order to support the many different Linux/BSD/Solaris/OSX package management systems. A listing of currently-handled packages can be found in your PTS installation directory (phoronix-test-suite/pts-core/external-test-dependencies/ or /usr/share/phoronix-test-suite/pts-core/external-test-dependencies/xml/ usually) for a list of the "generic names" for package management.

                  Is it working besides that?

My 6 core 4930k @ 4.2Ghz VS this beast. BTW, 4930K is $580 at newegg.

Wow, 5960 is pretty amazing. Michael, OC it to 4.2 and give me a more fair comparison!
