Phoronix: Openage: Making Age of Empires II Open-Source

Like Xoreos, GemRB, and OpenMW that seek to remake popular proprietary games/engines as open-source, Openage is another such project and it's seeking to free the once popular Age of Empires II game...

OpenAge needs the original game assets, while http://play0ad.com does not, has been improved and IMO has superior graphics...

I tend to prefere sprite-based RTS games!

Random observation: there is a handy catalogue of other game clones at http://osgameclones.com/.

Unfortunately 0 A.D still unplayable due to it's simulation performance issues.

I think another recreation of an rts engine is a waste of time instead of improving on the ones currently out there or making assets for it.

now if a company donate or Foss the engine that's another story.

Well if I see an engine recreated it would be cooler Warcraft 3 or starcraft. O(∩_∩)O

I feel the same. I want to like 0 AD, but I have a hard time getting into it. I don't game a lot, but I still play AOE2.

I'm not sure what the point of this project is... isn't this kind of like legitimizing the closed-sourcedness of the thing its trying to clone? If you're going to the effort of cloning part of a game, why not just make a whole brand new game that is totally open? Saves the whole problem of reverse engineering even.
