Phoronix: Manjaro Works To Make Calamares A Distribution-Independent Installer

The Arch-based Manjaro crew has been developing Calamares, an open-source installation framework they hope will basically lead to being a universal Linux distribution installer...

Looks pretty much like the ubuntu installer. I'm not impressed, after regularly installing openSUSE on many machines I require far more from an installer, than what is shown here (LVM & RAID setup, package selection, auth methods, etc...).

It might be a good thing for small distributions, but I doubt if Fedora/RedHat will drop their 15 year old graphics installer for calamares.

I would welcome unified instsallers, install packages and formats a lot.
A standardized but flexible approach would really make deployment of software/apps on Linux much easier.

The installer developers should add support for GoboLinux:

GoboLinux has a different directory structure.
Supporting GoboLinux would show if this new installer system can be flexible enough or not.

This is a distribution installer, not a package installer.

Red Hat just replaced their installer, which makes it all the more likely that they won't look at this one.

Calamares is not a Manjaro project. It was started by a guy who mainly identifies with KDE: http://teom.org/

Actually a Fedora KDE guy is investigating just that.

Why do Linux projects always get awkward names?

So how many distro installers is this? I know Chakra is working on their own, Debian has their own, Ubuntu has its own (and its derivatives and flavors mostly use that one), Fedora rewrote its own, I think Antergos has its own, etc.

But this one is different! It will be universal and everyone will adopt it!

Fundamentally, if the people in the other distros want to write and maintain their own installer, then you won't change their mind. You can hold up your work and say "maybe try this?" and anyone who does not go for it won't be persuaded otherwise.
