That's really nice of him. It's too bad that some companies like Sony (PS4 based on FreeBSD) have never donated to FreeBSD.
Not only is it too bad, but it is a shame
How many companies build their success on an open-source base, then spend millions and millions into adds and not a cent for the source of their success?
This donation is a great example of win/win mentality for large companies, let's hope others will follow!

Companies dont care AT ALL. What matters is Profit, profit, profit, profit. Open Source is their never ending source, and they dont give back anything. Fuck you Sony.

It reduces their cost, and because big companies in a competitive environment tend to have constant margins, that reduction is passed to their customers (profit is increased through increased market share, obtained, incidentally by price reductions).
Companies are modern societies main production tools, why would you want them not to reuse code?
It's a lot of money for a donation, I dunno if that generous man doesn't know how to spend his money or it's pure thankfulness, but for me even the dog doesn't move his tail for nothing, even though I see some circumstances:
- every os is integrating linux compatibility layers for integrating video drivers (making every os closer to linux structure)
- systemd is becoming de defacto init for every GNU/linux OS and will be integrated in every piece of software (so software will hardly become available on non-linux kernels OSes, IMHO this is the reason why RedHat is pushing this software forwards)
so maybe with this amount of money they will bring systemd to FreeBSD...
