Default S3 Graphics Linux Driver Faster Than Windows?

Phoronix: S3 Graphics Linux Driver Faster Than Windows?

Back in November we saw the launch of the S3 Graphics Chrome 530 GT and with that they talked up a new magical Linux driver that would provide HD video acceleration support along with OpenGL 3.0 capabilities. But no driver was released, however, a day later it was confirmed by S3 Graphics that they were working on a new Linux driver...

or perhaps the driver is more or less the same, and the performance difference is in other areas of the system, where linux is superior?

No surprise given how slow Vista is. S3 on Linux is probably still slower than on XP, though.

Did actually all rendering features work (GLSL for normalmapping, reflective water etc. etc.) or did Nexuiz fall back to the GL 1.x rendering path?

When comes to binary blobs probably not. Vista is slower in games than xp. Games system requirements are as far as I know always higher for vista.

Well that was a surprise. I'd definitely prefer the "linux driver is good" over the "windows driver is bad"

That would depend on the implementation they chose. NVidia is on a par or faster, depending on the game, in most cases. ATI's getting to the same space with fglrx.

Vista results stinking on ice...who'd have thunk that?
