Does the opening up of the specs mean we can get r500/600 framebuffer support in the linux kernel? I'm sick of ugly block text consoles.

I would have to say, that most likely so. However as of a timeframe, I couldn't say. Depends on how fast progress is made.

Yes, there will be R500/600 support in the kernel once the new driver is stable and all up to handling the tasks of being in the kernel. I would estimate Q1/Q2'08 at the earliest.

I have a FireGL V5250-based laptop, and I'm finding that the VESA framebuffer works OK. I can only get 1400x1050 resolution instead of 1680x1050, but it's close enough for a console.

i'd love dedicated fb driver or at least support in vesafb/uvesafb for those cards. and svgalib as well - watching videos in mplayer with -vo cvidix is way fun :]
