    Phoronix: Wine 1.3.24 Continues Direct3D 9.0 Implementation

Two weeks ago marked the release of Wine 1.3.23, which implemented more Direct3D 9.0 functionality, but for many users -- as pointed out in the forums -- it regressed a great deal. A lot of Windows games were now crashing and other Direct3D-related issues emerged with the newly-implemented functions. Wine 1.3.24 has now been released and it continues work on the Direct3D 9.0 support...

Why would anyone want to play World of Goo through Wine?

If they keep up the good work in 10 more years the DirectX9 support will be complete.

Perhaps they already owned the Windows version before converting to Linux. At any rate, bugs fixed there will benefit all apps. Wine doesn't accept hacks that fix individual games, only baseline functional corrections - which means WoG fixes will fix Windows compatibility across the board.

Or maybe it will never be complete. Not when MS keeps pushing out new D3dx9_##.dlls.

At least it's not like you can't play practically all the best games already. DX9 doesn't have to be "complete" for that, and there are almost no games that require DirectX10/11? Of the very fewgames that do, most seem to suck hard. I'm sure newer DirectX versions will get the appropriate attention when there's actually something good enough to motivate someone to write the code.

Yeah, I think they're not working enough to deserve our money ....

Serious Talking: well, isn't Wine's purpose to let windows apps run under other platforms the same way they run under windows ? What's better than cross-platform apps to test that ?

Open-source apps are way better, it's a lot easier to track down where a bug is located when you have the source code for the app.
