Phoronix: XvMC To Support More Video Standards?
While the XvMC (X-Video Motion Compensation) extension is reliable for offloading MPEG video decoding to the GPU, its limitation is that it only supports MPEG video formats and nothing more. We had expected XvMC not to be around much longer, since Intel has been devoting resources in creating a new video extension for X.Org... http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=NjM1Ng |

The modified (and open source) libxvmc in the openChrome Project have supported offloading of MPEG-2, MPEG-4 ASP (MPEG-4 part 2) and MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10) video on VIA Unichrome graphics hardware for a few years now. Thanks to not only Motion-Compensation and iDCT but also VLD (Variable Length Decoding.
http://www.openchrome.org http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/XvMC#Unichrome http://wiki.openchrome.org/tikiwiki/...ardwareCaveats ...I still have my hopes high for VA API to fully replace XvMC though, but more GPU manufactures needs to jump on the VAAPI project for that to happen. |

AFAIK, there hasn't been support for H.264, only MPEG-4 ASP. And I don't think that has been really functional either, as can be seen on the HardwareCaveats Wiki page you linked to. VIA doesn't yet have hardware support for H.264 decoding.

I was recently stunned that fglrx installed without trouble^ and furthermore after installing an extra package I got "desktop effects" working on my Radeon X1950 GT under Ubuntu 7.10
Amazing! Are you now suggesting I might be able to offload MPEG2 (HDTV) decoding the GPU? This is exactly what I have been needing for a HTPC solution for over the last 2 years (if not more). How do I go about it? ^it might be the case of a colour distortion on HDTV channels. |
