Phoronix: Virgil: Experimental Virtual 3D Support For QEMU

David Airlie publicly announced plans today for his new Virgil project, a virtual GPU capable of 3D acceleration for QEMU. Guest OpenGL (and potentially Direct3D) commands from the virtualized KVM/QEMU guest are passed onto the host for hardware acceleration...

Well, it's a start. And, as GNOME-Boxes relies on QEMU, this may make it a much more realistic replacement for Virtualbox in the long run, perhaps on par with the user-friendliess of something like Parallels. Also, with a fresh approach, maybe there will be improvements over what we've seen elsewhere in virtual 3D acceleration.

      3DFX Support

It'd be nice if someone would implement support for a virtual Voodoo2 or 3DFX graphics card. Glide wrappers are NOT good enough. There is currently no 3dfx emulator that runs all the Glide/3DFX/Direct3d 1/2/3/4/5/6 games correctly. This includes within wine, Dosbox or any other system. It would be really nice if someone could please implement this. It could negate the use for wine on older applications (which doesn't work anyway and the devs aren't interested in supporting it.). The only other alternative would be to fork DosBox and start a version of it that runs windows inside it.

Is there a chance that a driver for this could be written for Windows 9x?
Support for that family of OS's is largely lacking in both VMWare and Virtualbox.

The project isn't currently for end users, earlier adopters, or benchmarking article writers.
So is Mr Phoronix in the clear as long as he doesn't benchmark Virgil, or will Airlie disapprove of this article as well :P

(Thanks for the article by the way)

I'd rather see a native GLide gallium state tracker but +1
