Default Fedora 7 Excitement Begins

F7 Test 1 is finally shipping in about an hour from now... though that hasn't stopped me from going through all of the mirrors looking for an open mirror (I didn't get any early copy). I found one open mirror in Taiwan, but that one was corrupted and the DVD ended up being 1GB Then I ended up finding a US one with open-access to 32-bit disc 1! So I downloaded that to at least take a look at Anaconda, but then that broke after 10MB.

I think I'll just wait another 45 minutes for the official mirrors to open. Though next time I'll just code a program to traverse all official mirrors looking for early access.

It's open on Duke Go Grab it!

Though it's going slow right now.... 4 hours for the LiveCD and 12 hours for the DVD. Time to find a better mirror.

I'm downloading the dvd at 300kB/sec right now. I should be able to do an install in an hour or so.

What mirror are you using? My original downloads have since chocked. Though the Kernel.org mirror is now up and going very well.

I was not using a mirror, I used bittorrent. The download is over, I will install in a few hours.

Good writeup on the first test build Michael, it looks sharp. I love the looks of the new icons and the fact an easy to use installer is there for the taking.

What's up with the lack of GCC though? Geez.

The lack of GCC is due to Fedora developers claiming a normal desktop user not compiling things... that they should just use yum.

I downloaded the installer dvd. I could not install on an nf7-s (Barton 3200+) computer, seems like pata devices were not recognized. Tomorrow I will try installing on an Intel platform P4 XE@3.73ghz and an Asus p5wd2 Premium.

I haven't had any problems with PATA devices... You might want to try booting it with all-generic-ide argument just to see if that does anything.

You'd have to have simple needs in order to -only- want what's in the repository. I guess they are trying to keep the system slim, and if it's a simple yum install gcc away, I guess it's not so bad.

But still :/
