Just tried it with oibaf PPA + Linux 3.13.5:

It runs at comparable FPS with noticably less input lag/is much more responsive compared to AMD Catalyst (Radeon HD 6870 1GB).

At this point, AMD Catalyst is probably only useful for GCN based cards using demanding applications. Pre-GCN is better off with Mesa now.

Why? Kaveri is awesome, and the AMD Catalyst is pretty usable nowadays, so no worries. Also radeonsi is developing ridiculously fast, so you could switch soon if you wanted.

Catalyst is still useful if you have multiple GPUs, want openGL 4.3 support, and better openCL support (last time I checked, openCL isn't an option for open source drivers). I'm sure it has some bonuses for firepro cards too. The open source drivers still have a long way to go, but in terms of everyday use for the average user, they're definitely good enough.
