Intel developer John Harrison has published a set of 40 patches this morning for rolling out a GPU scheduler in the i915 DRM driver.

The intent of this GPU scheduler is to better manage batch buffer submissions to the GPU. The scheduler will find matching nodes and give priority to nodes that have other dependencies in the queue to be executed.

An exhaustive explanation of how this batch buffer scheduler is designed can be found via this patch series. Tests are still being done by Intel to see just how effective this code would be for this open-source Intel Linux graphics driver.
