New SDIO WiFi Driver Added To Linux 4.8
For those that didn't know, SDIO is the specification from the SD Association that allows Secure Digital slots to be used for more than just memory/storage. SDIO allows for SD/microSD-sized WiFI adapters, Ethernet, GPS, cameras, and other peripherals.
The new staging driver in Linux 4.8 is ks7010. This ks7010 open-source driver for months has been available outside of the kernel and based upon some code done by Renesas while now it's available mainline via the staging area. This KS7010 driver adds support for KeyStream KS7010 SDIO hardware. This KS7010 SDIO WiFi hardware is found at least in the Spectec SDW-821 and Spectec SDW-823 microSD cards.
These Spectec SDIO WiFi cards don't appear to be too popular now, at least in the US. I was only able to find the SDW-821 via third-party sellers on Amazon.
Beyond this new SDIO WiFI driver, the staging pull for Linux 4.8 just had the usual churn for common suspects like the Android code, wilc1000, IIO, Comedi, Lustre, etc. The staging pull request that was already honored last week can be seen here.
