Fedora 19 Might Replace Rsyslogd With Journald
While Fedora 18 is still more than one month away and we don't even know the Fedora 19 codename yet, one F19 feature is being talked about already. Fedora 19 might replace rsyslog with systemd's journald as the default process for system logging.
Systemd's journald is a system journaling service to collect and store logging data. The journals are indexed and logs messages in a secure manner. Systemd secures logs with a new process it calls forward secure sealing.
A journal has been available for systemd since last year but was rejected as a Fedora 18 feature and will now be re-attempted for Fedora 19.
Lennart started a new mailing list discussion about replacing rsyslogd with journald in Fedora as the default. There's also now another thread about coming up with blockers for making journald the default logger in Fedora 19.
We'll see in the coming months whether F19 will use journald as the default.
