Lots Of Ubuntu Mir Changes Expected Next Week

Ahead of the Ubuntu 13.10 feature freeze, expect Mir multi-monitor support and composition bypass support to land around next week.

Canonical's Community Manager, Jono Bacon, has written a Mir update and for testing its current state of the next-generation Ubuntu display server.

While most Phoronix readers are all up to date on the Mir state and Canonical's latest developments, Jono has a few notes:

- "In 14.04 we will deploy Mir but not provide the X fallback mode, and we are in active discussions with GPU manufacturers for them to support Mir in their drivers." It sounds less likely like NVIDIA and AMD will produce EGL-supported binary blobs compatible with Mir prior to Ubuntu 13.10 but rather ahead of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS next April.

- Multi-monitor Mir support is expected to land in full around next week (22 August).

- Composite bypass support for Mir in order to boost OpenGL (gaming) performance should also land around the 22nd of the month.

- "Mir is naturally still under heavy development, so don’t consider it finished quite yet. ;-) The team will be focusing on bug-fixing and performance optimizations when the primary feature development is completed."

- Mir should land for the daily Ubuntu Touch images in the next week or so.
