Besides opening up the Steamworks VR API code, Valve has also made public another update to the SteamOS 1.0 "Alchemist" Linux distribution that's still in beta.

The SteamOS 2/10/2014 update to Alchemist isn't too exciting but does add in extra packages needed for running the GDB debugger, NFS, and for supporting an Alchemist chroot. While there's the packages for GDB, we haven't seen any SteamOS work yet for bettering LLDB, the LLVM debugger that's of much interest to Valve. We're also very excited to see Valve's VOGL debugger that should make its public debut in the next few weeks.

Other changes to the SteamOS Linux update that was made on Monday includes pre-installing all possible firmware packages to provide better WiFi network support, a steamos-updatelevel dummy package that tracks the SteamOS version to increase with new updates, and a number of updated packages. Among the updated SteamOS packages this round include initramfs-tools, eglibc, libdrm, and iptables.
