Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To Ubuntu 14.10 Offers Some Performance Improvements
Curious how the CPU performance of Ubuntu Linux has evolved from the 12.04 LTS release compared to 14.04 LTS and then the latest 14.10 release? Here's some benchmarks.
In this article is looking at how the (non-graphics) performance of Ubuntu Linux has shifted over time when comparing Ubuntu 14.10 to the 14.04.1 LTS and 12.04.5 LTS releases. OpenGL benchmarks with these releases plus the latest Linux kernel + Mesa Git will follow in another Phoronix article.
These quick comparison tests done for curiosity's sake was with a dual AMD Opteron 2384 system with 8GB of RAM, 64GB OCZ Agility EX SSD, and Radeon HD 5830 graphics.
All of the benchmark results can be found via OpenBenchmarking.org.
There are some EXT4 file-system improvements over the past two and a half years...
Some CPU-related changes.
Regressions too are visible.
GCC compiler performance improvements also happened during this time.
