Besides Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 1, also releasing today is openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 5. This openSUSE release is in preparation for the Nürnberg-based distribution having its official release in November. Among the features for openSUSE 12.1 is integration with the systemd manager and the GNOME 3.2 desktop.

Highlights for openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 5 include further work on migrating from InitV to systemd (in openSUSE 12.1 systemd is only being made optional while the default switch will occur in the next release), the GNOME 3.1.5 development desktop, and glibc 2.14. This is also the last openSUSE milestone release shipping with the Oracle-provided Java binary. All future openSUSE releases will carry the GPL'ed OpenJDK Java package following some recent Java changes by Oracle concerning its official version.
