Examination:

The site claims that this premium paper is literally some of the finest sandpaper that can be bought at any price. This is quite a claim, but upon examining the papers, the claim is actually quite believable. Of course, during actual usage we shall know for sure. The glass included is de-burred, so you won’t have to worry about it giving you some nasty cuts when you are sanding away viciously at your heatsink (which is the wrong way to do it by the way).

Performance:

Our victim of the day is the Thermalright SI-97. This heatsink is quite the performer, but it seems to be not flat OR the nickel plating may be inhibiting heat conduction. So we decided to lap through the nickel plating on the bottom.

We read through the instructions and set off to lap the SI-97. The instructions were very clear and we will not restate them here, but rather if you are interest click here.

The lapping took about 6 hours because we lapped through all of the nickel plating. We would estimate a normal lapping with this kit would take about 3-4 hours.

Conclusion:

After the heatsink was finally done being lapped, we checked various reflections of straight lines and checker patterns to make sure it was flat, and indeed it was. As for improved cooling, we can't give a concrete verdict since the ambient temperature of the room had already changed a lot in the six hours. However, we can say the lapping dropped the CPU temperature by at least 2-3°C. Overall we liked this lapping kit. This is probably one of the best sets of sandpaper to buy if you are going to do any sort of lapping. The sandpaper was very tough and didn’t lose its cutting surface even after so much sanding. We’re sure it can be used again for two or three more heatsinks. The paper did, however, curl when wet, but a little water between the glass and sandpaper fixed that. This is a nice kit and a good choice for lapping.

Pros:

· Easy to use
