AMD Ryzen 5 5600G Linux Performance

The Ryzen 5 5600G (and Ryzen 7 5700G) were working out well with the ASUS TUF GAMING B550M PLUS WiFi motherboard during testing with 2 x 8GB DDR4-3600 memory, 1TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe SSD, and using Ubuntu 21.04 with Linux 5.11 for this round of testing. The Linux support experience is basically the same as the 5700G, which is in good shape with modern Linux distributions. The only real Linux support caveat worth mentioning for the 5600G/5700G for the moment is the APU temperature monitoring not in place until Linux 5.15.

First up is a look at the Ryzen 5 5600G / Ryzen 7 5700G graphics performance under Linux against Intel's Core i5 11600K and prior Core i5 10600K (unfortunately lacking any prior generation 4700G). Ubuntu 21.04 was used across the test systems with the Linux 5.11 kernel and Mesa 21.3-devel from 14 August using the Oibaf PPA. Coming up next week will be a proper 5600G/5700G Linux gaming comparison article while this round of graphics testing is looking at just some basic gaming and graphics tests.

It's not much of a surprise if you saw the earlier Ryzen 7 5700G Linux review, but the Radeon Graphics with these Zen 3 APUs work out very well and easily outperform the Gen12 graphics found with the Core i5 11600K Rocket Lake processor and the older Gen9 graphics of the Core i5 10600K.

Next week's Ryzen 5600G/5700G Linux gaming article will look at how capable these AMD APUs are across a wide variety of Steam on Linux (including Steam Play) gaming tests. But in terms of the performance against the current Intel desktop processors, the 5600G/5700G are easily leading on Linux.
