AMD Radeon R9 290 Linux Update With Source Engine On Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Similar to Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2 was becoming CPU bottlenecked and not seeing much of an advantage out of the higher-end graphics hardware from AMD and NVIDIA. However, like CS: Source, the Radeon R9 290 and other higher-end Radeon GPUs were topping out at a noticeably lower frame-rate than the GeForce hardware with NVIDIA's Linux driver. At 1920 x 1080 the R9 290 averaged out to 155 FPS while the NVIDIA GPUs were pushing 195 FPS. Likewise, at 2560 x 1600, the R9 290 topped out at 157 FPS while the NVIDIA hardware could easily reach between 170~190 FPS with this popular Valve free-to-play game.
