AMDGPU vs. Radeon GCN 1.0/1.1 Performance On Linux 4.9 DRM-Next
The results for these other tests don't really show anything new.
The R9 270X and R7 370 (Pitcairn) GPUs consistently performed worse with the AMDGPU experimental support while the Radeon HD 7950 performance was close to the same throughout testing though in Tesseract did slightly better with the more modern DRM driver. The Radeon R7 260X saw mostly the same performance level between the two kernel drivers except for regressing in Metro Last Light Redux.
Keep in mind the AMDGPU GCN 1.0/1.1 support is experimental in Linux 4.9 and requires rebuilding your kernel with the Kconfig options enabled in order to use this alternative to Radeon. While the performance is unchanged or worse, at least in time this support will hopefully improve and it will allow for AMDGPU-PRO / Vulkan / RADV support for AMD GPUs going back to GCN 1.0. Stay tuned for more benchmarks as the support stabilizes.
