Ampere Altra Performance Shows It Can Compete With - Or Even Outperform - AMD EPYC & Intel Xeon
With 160 physical cores for workloads like M-Queens that thread well the performance easily comes out in front of the x86_64 competition.
For those wondering about the single-threaded performance of Ampere Altra, in cases like Numpy the Xeon Platinum 8280 2P came out ahead to little surprise especially with its 4.00GHz turbo frequency or 3.4GHz boost with the EPYC 7742. But in any case for the single-threaded performance it's competitive with the x86_64 competition and with 160 physical cores can certainly accommodate more jobs.
Or in the case of the single-threaded PHP performance, the Ampere Altra came in front of EPYC Rome. In such light single-threaded workloads where the Mount Jade 2P server is basically idle, the combined Q80-33 wattage was about 73 Watts to the Xeon Platinum 8280 2P at 85 Watts and the EPYC 7742 at 148 Watts.
The outcome with PyBench was similar and for the single-threaded light workload having the lowest CPU power consumption.
Going into this testing I wasn't expecting the Ampere Altra Q80-33 to be trading blows with the top-end Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC SKUs so I have been quite surprised by the performance over the past month.
