Apple M2 On Linux Performance Against AMD Zen 4 Mobile SoCs
Those wishing to go through 120 benchmarks in total for the Apple M2 against these AMD Zen 4 SoCs can find the numbers on the raw result page. Just CPU benchmarks were carried out due to the Apple M1/M2 Linux graphics stack still being brought up.
If taking the geometric mean of all the benchmarks, the Apple M2 8GB with the MacBook Air on the current Asahi Linux was around 78% the speed of the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme out-of-the-box with the ASUS ROG Ally running Linux. Or compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U within the Acer Swift Edge 16 laptop on Linux, the MacBook Air tested came in at around 57% the speed of that interesting Phoenix SoC.
Out of the 120 tests, the Apple M2 did come in first place a handful of times.
Most interesting would have been to see how the power efficiency of the M2 SoC compares to the AMD chips tested, but alas there is currently no SoC power information exposed under Linux for the M2 while just monitoring wall power would have been not too accurate given the sharp hardware differences. In any event here is the AMD power numbers overall. If the Apple M2 is only pulling 5~8 Watts on load as some claim, even with the current state of the Linux support for Apple Silicon it would be quite a competitive battle.
