As it's been a while since my last round of cross-desktop graphics comparisons or X.Org vs. Wayland in the case of GNOME, some of the results came as a bit of a surprise. On this page all of the games were run full-screen.

In particular, GNOME on Wayland now offered superior performance for OpenArena compared to running the same GNOME Shell build under X11. The slowest desktop when running OpenArena was Cinnamon while the other desktops performed close to the same speed.

There were no huge performance differences to note with the open-source SuperTuxKart racing game.

When running Xonotic, GNOME on Wayland offered again the highest frame-rates compared to GNOME on the X.Org Server or the other X11-based desktops. Cinnamon meanwhile yielded the lowest frame-rates.
