Linux 4.18 AMDGPU Tests: Vega Taking A Hit
Rise of the Tomb Raider was at least running stable in our tests.
Long story short, the RX 580 (Polaris) and R9 Fury (Fiji) performance was stable between Linux 4.17.5 and 4.18 Git with no real changes to report. But with the Radeon RX Vega 64 on Linux 4.18, there is definitely a regression. For many games -- particularly when at 1080p or less demanding scenarios -- the RX Vega 64 saw a sizable performance drop compared to using the Linux 4.17 kernel. Presumably this is due to some of the power/clocking changes made for Vega in the Linux 4.18 merge window. Vega in general seems a bit rough on Linux 4.18 as additionally, DisplayPort wasn't working for me but the HDMI output is working fine with the RX Vega 64 and I've seen similar display-related bug reports for Vega recently too. Hopefully it will be solved within the next few weeks prior to the stable kernel debut in August.
