Open-Source Radeon Graphics Have Some Improvements On Linux 3.17
Tesseract was 8% faster with using the newer kernel. Unfortunately, the Linux 3.17 kernel won't be found by default in Fedora 21 and Ubuntu 14.10 and Debian 8.0 with many upcoming Linux distributions looking to use Linux 3.16.
Unigine Heaven was also slightly faster with Linux 3.17 on the open-source driver.
For some of the GpuTest OpenGL micro-benchmarks were also performance improvements to see.
Overall this latest round of open-source AMD Linux GPU performance improvements is promising, at least for the R9 270X. Tests are currently being done from other AMD GPUs to see what other graphics cards will benefit from the Linux 3.17 improvements and to see how the performance compares to the Radeon R9 290 that should now be playing well with the open-source RadeonSI driver.
