Tagan Icy Box NAS4220 NAS Enclosure
Conclusion:
Tagan, a company we once associated with power supplies, has proved it can make a remarkable Network Attached Storage device with the Icy Box NAS4220. This is our first time trying out any product from the Icy Box family but we are very pleased with this unit and look forward to checking out their related products. The NAS4220 is able to accommodate two Serial ATA 2.0 HDDs and then share these files using FTP, NFS, share files to iTunes via DAAP, and serve as a DHCP and print server if needed. Another one of the many possibilities using the NAS4220 as a Bit Torrent client for storing files.
The RAID 0/1/JBOD capabilities with EXT2/EXT3 support, but we would really like to see XFS and ReiserFS support too (and EXT4 down the road). The construction of this device is top-notch and there are no complaints about its design. Though for those users needing an NAS that supports more than two hard drives, unfortunately Tagan has no answer for that right now. It would be terrific to see a four or eight drive version of the NAS4220, and hopefully down the road Tagan will have an answer for that. If you are looking for this Linux-based NAS, it can be found via online stores for about a modest $140 USD. We really like this NAS device and our only complaint is that we'd like to see a more streamlined user-interface for the web-based control panel.
