In many cases, using the newer Linux software stack provided small performance benefits over the performance found in late 2019.

While the underlying operating system was changed as the intent of this comparison, the actual benchmark versions/configurations were kept 1:1 identical as from 2019 with the Phoronix Test Suite version locking. In some cases using newer versions of the software under test may also help advance the performance, but that was out of the scope of today's article with just looking at the underlying software performance changes.

In some cases there are big performance improvements as a result of underlying improvements, such as with R 4.0.
