Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10 saw very significant gains as previously outlined due to the shift from GCC 10 to GCC 11 and other improvements made last year. With Ubuntu 22.04 sticking to the same system compiler and a rather conservative shift from Linux 5.13 to 5.15, the differences aren't as dramatic -- and considering the increasing maturity of the RISC-V software ecosystem.

Still for some workloads seeing some small performance improvements with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and at least no glaring regressions.

For many workloads though the FU740 on the HiFive Unmatched still performs more slowly than what is provided by an Arm-based Raspberry Pi, so it will be interesting to see what SiFive products are ready to go in 2022 with hopefully seeing a higher performance developer board.
