AMD has published the initial patches for supporting the "Fiji" GPU with HBM memory, a.k.a. the new Radeon R9 Fury graphics cards, by the open-source "AMDGPU" Linux driver stack.

Alex Deucher today sent out the initial patches for adding Fiji support. "This patch set adds Fiji support to the open source amdgpu driver. The relevant mesa and ddx changes have also been sent out the their respective mailing lists."

Before getting too excited, while the support is complete, there is not any power management support. "Support for
Fiji is complete (GFX, SDMA, UVD, VCE, etc.) except for power management. Power management for dGPUs is still in progress an will be released in the future."

The Radeon R9 285 "TONGA" supported by the AMDGPU kernel driver also lacks power management support and that's why it was performing so poorly in my AMDGPU Linux 4.2 tests.

The AMD Fiji support for the AMDGPU driver should be settled in time for the Linux 4.3 kernel. There's still hope of the AMDGPU changes needed in user-space coming in time for Mesa 11.0 in September.

While the performance will be limited for lack of power management support, once the patches do land I will be testing them out on the Radeon R9 Fury. If you missed my Catalyst-based Linux testing of the R9 Fury you can check it out there.
