ARM developers today posted their first public version of a DRM driver for their Mali Display Processors.

This initial DRM driver just called "arm" is for supporting their Mali DP500, DP550, and DP650 display hardware. The driver supports up to three planes with hardware rotation support. This driver isn't yet feature complete but good enough for getting X11 running when using fbdev emulation or Wayland when using Pixman rendering.

Before getting too excited, the DP500/DP550/DP650 display hardware doesn't appear to be related to the more common Mali hardware currently found in a plethora of ARM SoCs. This new driver effort is also completely unrelated to the stalled Lima driver project.

This DRM display driver comes in at just over 2,000 lines of code and this driver in its current review state can be found via the kernel mailing list. Hopefully the ARM developers involved will get this driver into shape for merging into the mainline Linux kernel in one of the upcoming release cycles.
