LINUX GAMING
Exactly one year to the day after writing Company of Heroes 2 might be coming to Linux, today marks the planned release of the Linux port of CoH 2.

Company of Heroes 2 for Linux isn't up on Steam at the moment, but it's expected to appear there within the next few hours. As mentioned last week with regards to the system requirements, this Linux/OSX game port by Feral Interactive Games lists Intel or NVIDIA graphics as the requirement. "Requires an Intel Iris Pro graphics card or an NVIDIA 600 series graphics card or better with driver version 352.21 or later." But a GeForce GTX 760 or better is what Feral recommends for the game on Linux. There's no mention at all of AMD Catalyst or RadeonSI support, so we'll just have to see what goes wrong with it later today...

Under Windows, Company of Heroes 2 does have a built-in benchmark mode that's accessible from the game's menu system. Sadly, I haven't seen any references that it has any command-line switches for being able to automate the benchmark from start-up to completion... So it may be another situation like Shadow of Mordor where they have the benchmark support but sadly miss out on the tiny bits to make the game great for benchmarking. Without any switches, the automation won't be there and thus won't be tested much at Phoronix after today.

I plan to buy Company of Heroes 2 for Linux this morning just to see what happens when running AMD Catalyst/RadeonSI with this game and to report on those findings. If the benchmark mode looks interesting enough, I may run a few manual tests for reference... (Or a lot, should there be CLI support.) That will largely be driven by how many Phoronix Premium subscribers today request CoH2 Linux benchmarks or tips (including Bitcoin) come in earmarked for benchmarking this game, so make your voice heard. At least with Intel Iris Graphics on Linux reportedly working out for this port, only OpenGL 3 is being utilized (and perhaps already supported GL4 extensions) and should run with the other Mesa/Gallium3D drivers.

Company of Heroes 2 is currently listed for $39.99 USD via the Steam store.
