This week marks the Darktable 2.2.0-RC1 release as the developers of this open-source photography workflow software prepare for its official release, just in time if you are planning to get some new camera gear this holiday season.

Darktable 2.2 is a big release even though Darktable 2.0 was great -- more than two thousand commits have gone into this 2.2 development code thus far.

New for Darktable 2.2 is an automatic perspective correction module, a liquify tool, a new image module to use a Color Look-Up Table to change colors in an image, darktable-chart is a new tool, there is now a raw over-exposure indication, darktable-cli can now work on directories, and quite a lot of other improvements and changes.

When it comes to Darktable's OpenCL support, the 2.2 release now discards CPU-based OpenCL devices and introduces new OpenCL methods for VNG/VNG4 demo-scaling and Markesteijn demosaicing method for X-Trans sensors.

More details on all of the changes coming for Darktable 2.2 can be found via the GitHub announcement.
