After rumors were swirling last week that Dell was planning to buy EMC, the parent company of VMWare, for $50 billion USD, today that information was firmed up and the purchase price is actually $67 billion -- making it one of the largest tech deals ever.

Dell buying out EMC will further expand its enterprise footprint and is part of their goal to become an end-to-end technology company. VMware meanwhile will remain an independent, publicly-traded company.

While not all of you are interested in VMware virtualization, don't forget that VMware employs many core Mesa/Gallium3D developers after they acquired Tungsten Graphics a few years back so they'd have an in-house team working on their virtual VMware (VMWgfx) open-source graphics driver stack for providing 2D/3D acceleration to guest VMs.

More details on Dell buying out EMC can be found via this morning's press release.
