Dell Reportedly Shipping Ubuntu-Based Linux On 40%+ Of PCs In China
While piracy is very rampant in China and Windows XP remains very popular there, Dell is reportedly shipping NeoKylin OS, a Linux operating system based on Ubuntu Kylin, on 42% of their new PCs shipping in China.
A report in the Wall Street Journal states, "Han Naiping, chief executive of China Standard Software, said that Dell became the first Western brand to make personal computers running his company’s NeoKylin operating system after they began a partnership in the second half of last year. Mr. Huang said 42% of Dell’s computers sold in China now run NeoKylin."
HP and other western PC companies are shipping NeoKylin in China too.
Unfortunately their overall Linux market-share isn't that high with it being fairly common practice there to then load a pirated version of Windows on the PC after the fact. Mark Shuttleworth previously expressed hope for having 200 million Ubuntu users by 2015 but it's not clear yet how they're doing on that front.
In western markets, Dell has released some Ubuntu laptops/PCs. In 2012 we were told Ubuntu would be shipping on 5% of PCs worldwide in 2013, but I'm not sure that goal was realized.
