Dropbox Opens Up "Lepton" Image Compression Algorithm
This streaming image compression format is being put out under the Apache license. Lepton is said to offer 22% savings reductions over existing JPEG images, compresses JPEG files at MB/s, and decides them at 15MB/s. It does all of this in under 24 MB of memory.
Lepton is already in use at Dropbox where it is said to have compressed over 16 billion images, saving the company petabytes of space.
